Steinway pianos have always been in competition with Bechstein similarly to Fender and Gibson regarding guitars. The key of Steinway's brilliant sound is that it's neither as bright as European pianos, nor as dark as Yamaha's. Probably that's why most artists pick this brand.

Besides Freddie's own Steinway, he used many others of the same model in various concerts (when supplied by local promoters), and loads of recordings, including We Are the Champions at Sarm West studios in London, Jazz sessions at Montreux, and all BBC recordings.
