Roger

One
of the best songs Roger ever wrote, and featuring some amazing
vocals from him. Played live often between News
and Flash tours.

Outro |
The
main key is E minor, and the progression used for most of the
song is i > III > VII > VI (same as Nirvana's Polly
[written by Kurt Cobain in 1988]). The outro is a perfect cadence
in D Major, and it almost sounds like taken from a different
song.
Metre
is 3/4, like Brian's Sweet Lady.
|
Basic
Queen combo as in the previous two tracks in the album: piano,
bass, drums and guitars. Very nice drumming all throughout.
|
Roger
hits some E's without falsetto, which is quite impressive (though
he'd done that earlier in Modern
Times Rock 'n' Roll and would repeat in More
of That Jazz).
|
Sometimes I wish that would've been a single in its time. Of
course, I made just as much money on it. It was the backside
of Bohemian Rhapsody,
so I probably made more money that way.
Roger
Taylor, Detroit Free
Press, 6th August 1982

|
We always rowed about money. A lot of terrible injustices take
place over songwriting. The major one is B-sides. Like, Bohemian
Rhapsody sells a million and Roger gets the
same writing royalties as Freddie because he did I'm
in Love With My Car. There was contention about
that for years.
Brian
May, Q,
March 1991

|
I remember my car at the time, because I think we've got the
exhaust on the record, and that was a little Alfa
Romeo. But I think it was more about people
in general, for instance boy racers. In particular we had a
sound guy/roadie at the time called Jonathan Harris, who was
so in love with his car, and that inspired that. I think he
had a TR4, Triumph
TR4.
